Walks a Short Drive Away
Back to Walking
The Peak District is vast and 1000′s of footpaths criss-cross the landscape so where you walk is not limited to the immediate vicinity if you have a car and are prepared to drive a bit further afield.
Being based in the High Peak District means that all of the big hills are fairly near by, so whether you want to walk or do some serious mountain biking you only need to take a short drive.
Kinder Scout
From wtching this video you can probably see why one of our absolute favourite walks is to take the car to Hayfield (15 mins drive) park in the car park (Pay & Display) at Kinder Bank (only a small car park so go early!) and walk up the road and onto the path past Kinder Reservoir up William Clough then go right along the Pennine Way to Kinder Downfall and then bear right towards Clutter Rocks past the Three Knolls along the side of Kinder End and across the fields to Tunstead Clough Farm and back down to the Car Park. Strenuous but great views which change with the seasons.
In a cold winter there are other possibilities for outdoor activities on Kinder! Some friends of ours had a great time last winter playing a bit of ice hockey on Mermaids Pool on Kinder. Oleg had never skated before!
Goyt Valley
This is a great 10K circuit up part of the Goyt Valley at low level and round Fernilee Reservoir. Take the A5004 towards Buxton. About 0.75k out of Whaley Bridge you will find a large lay-by on the right hand side to Park in (10 min drive). Take the path down and over the river, up to Taxal and left on to the Midshires Way. At Madscar Farm follow the main farm track down to the North end of Fernilee Reservoir. Bear right and follow the path round the edge of the reservoir. At the South end cross over and take the track back along the north bank. Back at the north end take the path left down along the River Goyt through Shallcross Wood and back to the car park.
Barber Booth & Edale
If you fancy a walk up Mam Tor, Back Tor and Lose Hill they are only a 25 minute drive away.
Take the A6 towards Chapel-en-le-Frith. Take the left turn signposted for Castleton and the Chestnut Centre. Drive along Rushup Edge and take the left turn to Barber Booth and Edale. You can park in either place depending on the walk you want to do.
Depending on the weather when you go you may well get to see the para-gliders gliding off MamTor.
