Sightseeing in the Peak District

Sightseeing in the Peak District

There is so much to get out and see in the Peak District. It really depends on what it is that flicks your switch.

Houses

There are lots of great houses to visit in the area many with great gardens too:

Chatsworth House

Haddon Hall

Lyme Park

A wonderful regal estate only 15 minutes from the cottage. It’s many claims to fame include being the backdrop to where Darcy meets Miss Bennet in Pride and Prejudice.
Sorry couldn’t resist a little video of Colin Firth – oh and Lyme Park!

Sudbury Hall

Two totally different experiences in one visit to this National Trust property.
Firstly the country home of the Lords Vernon, a showcase of 17th-century craftsmanship, with amazing plasterwork, wood carvings and classical murals.
Secondly there is The Museum of Childhood – relive your childhood no matter what your age now! Have a glance into the childhood of times gone by, make stories, play with toys and share your childhood with others.

Tissington Hall

This hall is not open to the general public but a visit to the village of Tissington is highly recommended. You can still have a look at the Hall as it is on the main street. Try and find the butchers if you fancy some great meat for dinner and you long for that old fashioned shopping experience!

Hardwick Hall

One of Britain’s greatest and most complete Elizabethan houses – a magnificent statement of the wealth and authority of its builder, Bess of Hardwick.

There are whole websites devoted to providing Peak District sightseeing information so you might want to take a look at these for starters:
The Peak District Park Authority – you could also follow them on Twitter.
The Visit Peak District & Derbyshire Destination Management Partnership – Almost everything you could want to know about the area.

If you are a member of the National Trust you might want to have a look at their new website dedicated to the Peak District.
