Running in the Peak District

Deep Mid-Wicket Peak District Holiday Cottage Going up Portobello BuxworthOne of the things we loved about living in the Peak District was the running. If you are looking to do some serious running or just want to get out once or twice, the cottage is the perfect base. You can easily run directly from the door for a good 10K over challenging hills or a short 2K fairly flat loop and only run on tracks, paths and quiet lanes which is fantastic. With it’s brilliant views and differing terrain the High Peak is the perfect place to enjoy some holiday running.

Then when you get home you can cool off in the garden, throw your kit in the washing machine and have an invigorating shower or long soak in the bath.

We have marked some of our favourite routes on the maps in the cottage so you can get out running from day one. It’s a great way to get to know the local area and enjoy some of the most amazing views (providing you enjoy going uphill first!).

The Goyte Valley Strollers & Striders

If you don’t want to go out running on your own you can always join up with the local running club, the Goyte Valley Striders. They are a really friendly group and have runners of all abilities that they accommodate by running in different groups. From beginners to county level runners they will welcome you with open arms. If you fancy going out with them while you are staying in the cottage I recommend you drop them a line via their website and get the details of where and when they will be running.
They run all year round so if you are coming in the winter bring a head torch if you want to go out with them one evening.

When they say all ability levels, they really do mean it, so don’t be shy get out and enjoy some great running in the Peak District with the advantage of some great local knowledge.

Running Clothing

Unfortunately there aren’t any great running shop in the immediate vicinity. However the Bike Factory – Whaley Bridge does sell off-road shoes as well as things like gloves an luminous gear and they are only just over a mile from the cottage.

More specialist items will require a much longer drive. The best specialist running shop is in Alderley Edge, Cheshire. Running Bear is only a small shop but they carry a large varied stock and the staff are very helpful, so the drive is worth it. They are open 7 days a week but call them first just to make sure they are open and have what you want – 01625 582130.
