Eating Out in the Peak District

Back to Things to do

Eating Out

There are lots of places to eat out fairly close by but to get you started these are some of our favorites. We have listed them roughly in order of distance from the cottage.
If you want to go out for the evening & take your dog you should have a look at our dog friendly recommendations.

The Navigation Inn
Brookside
Buxworth
High Peak
SK23 7NE
Tel: 01663 732072

We like this for its convenience. Only a few minutes walk from the cottage in Bugsworth Basin you will find the Navigation Inn. It has been taken over since we were last in Buxworth so can’t comment on the hospitality & food etc however dogs are still allowed in the bar area where you can sit and eat. Dogs are not allowed in the restaurant.

Peak District Old Hall Inn WhitehoughThe Old Hall Inn
Whitehough
Chinley
High Peak
SK23 6EJ
Tel: 01663 750529

Only a 20 minute walk up the Peak Forrest Tramway Trail or 5 minutes in the car and you will find this pub in the small village of Whitehough. As the name suggests this is a beautiful old hall dating back to the 16th Century. Definitely worth the walk, they serve great food, beer and wine. Well behaved dogs are welcome in the bar where you can also eat. No dogs in the restaurant.
It gets very busy at peak times so make sure you book in advance.

Memories of India
37a Buxton Road
Whaley Bridge
SK23 7HT
Tel: 01663 734141

This is a great Indian restaurant in the centre of Whaley Bridge. A good menu and good service. They do take away too.

If you want to walk it is a nice summer evening stroll up over Silk Hill & Bings (Turn left off Western Lane just before you go over the A6 bridge towards the Navigation). Or you can walk along the tow path into Whaley. Whichever way you go turn left onto the main road through Whaley and you will find them on the right just after the co-op.

Imperial Palace (Chinese)
142 Buxton Rd
Furness Vale
SK23
Tel: 01663 745777

Good food & lots of it, go when you are hungry!

A bit like sitting in someone’s dining room but a nice friendly place and you can walk there along the canal tow path in the summer if you want to burn off some of your feast on the way home!

The Fallow Deer
Foresters Way
Chapel En Le Frith
SK23 0RB
Tel: 01298 812346

This is a relatively new Marstons pub located just on the A6 going towards Chapel-en-le-Frith. It serves standard chain pub food and caters well for children with a children’s play area. Had mixed experiences but it is good for children.

The Hanging Gate
Manchester Road
Chapel-en-le-Frith
SK23 9UH
Tel: 01298 812776

This pub is located on the B5470 on the out skirts of Chapel-en-le-Frith near to Whaley Bridge. It is only a short drive or a very energetic walk over the hill at the back of the cottage.

The owners provide a warm welcome and good value food. If you go at Christmas or Halloween you will experience their unique decorations too!

The Royal Oak
Market Street
Chapel-en-le-Frith
SK23 0EN
Tel: 08721 077 077

Newly renovated and with a great chef this traditional pub has recently turned a corner. Doesn’t look much from the outside but give it a try you might be surprised.

Easy to find on the main street running through Chapel–en–le–Frith. Opposite the market square. If you enjoy live music they have local bands on too later in the evening some weeks. We can recommend the Beef Wellington if you have a big appetite!

Stocks Cafe & Bistro
Market Place
Chapel–en–le-Frith
SK23 0EN
Tel: 01298 814906

Never eaten here in the evening (not sure about the Cafe Bistro transition) but can highly recommend the Oatcakes for breakfast! Open from 9.30 on a Sunday if you feel the need!

Coco (Italian)
20a Market Street
Chapel-en-le-Frith
High Peak
SK23 0HH
Tel: 01298 813180

This is our favorite Italian. It is very small and does get busy so at peak times book before you go. Nothing fancy just regular Italian food served in a nice setting with attentive staff.

The Beehive Inn
Combs
High Peak
SK23
Tel: 01298 812 758

Located in the pretty village of Combs only a few minutes drive away, this is one of or favorites. Great food and a good atmosphere are almost guaranteed. Just drive into the village of Combs signposted from the B5470 between Chapel-en-le-Frith and Whaley Bridge and you can’t miss the pub. It gets very busy so we would recommend you book.

The Rams Head
Buxton Road West
Disley
Stockport
SK12 2AE
Tel: 01663 767909

Only a 10 minute drive away this is very different from some of the other places we have listed. A beautiful old building but with a contemporary interior. This is a great place to go in winter with big open fires. More of a gastro pub than a local pub. They serve good food and provide good service.
I go there sometimes in an afternoon for a coffee and cake.
It is really easy to find. If you drive in the Whaley Bridge and take the road that turns up next to the Railway Station. Follow the road round to the right and it will take you up over the top of the hill with great views. As you come down the other side you will see a set of traffic lights in front of you. Turn left immediately before the lights and into the car park.

Pizza Express
Unit 14
Cavendish Arcade
The Crescent
Buxton
SK17 6BQ
Tel: 01298 24922

For a nice ambiance and great Pizzas you can always try Pizza Express in Buxton. Does get very busy during high tourist season though.
