Going to the Cinema in the Peak District

The Cinema in the Peak District
At this point I should point out that as the cottage is in the Peak District there are no big multi-screen cinemas nearby, so please don’t come hoping there will be one.
What we do have however is slightly alternative and will provide you with a unique experience!
There is Chinley Community Cinema and The Regent Cinema in Marple.
Chinley Community Cinema
Closest to the cottage is the Chinley Community Cinema. In 2009, the Community Association set up the community cinema with the aim of running a film night once a month but sometimes they have two. The films are fairly recent releases and they show children’s films during school holidays as well.
The cinema is run in the Community Centre on Lower Lane in Chinley (just down the side of the Conservative club). The ticket prices are £3.50 (adult films) £2.00 (children’s films).
As you go through Chinley there are usually banners up on the roadside advertising the next film.
This is very different from going to the cinema in a big city. A hall, a screen, some chairs and a very enthusiastic community audience – Very much a rural event!
The Regent Cinema
Also within easy reach from the cottage is The Regent Cinema in Marple. It’s only a 20 minute drive from the cottage and well worth the effort.
The building itself was originally built as a mission hall and coffee shop back in 1878. It was bought by the Marple Cinema Company back in 1932 and since then has been run as an independent cinema. Now it’s one of only a few independent cinemas left in the UK.
The cinema shows the latest films but obviously with just one screen there is no choice. They do also show children’s films during school holidays in the daytime too.
This is a great old fashioned cinema with a definite touch of nostalgia and a great antidote to modern multiplexes with :
- A friendly atmosphere
- Big comfy seats
- Double back row seats!
- Lots of leg room
- Reasonable ticket prices
- Circle or stalls seating!
- An intermission half way through the film
- Attendants selling ice creams from a tray
- Is family run
It’s a great experience and you should try it if you have a free evening and you fancy the film.

Directions
- It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to drive to the cinema which is about 8 miles away.
- From the cottage go back over the A6 bridge past the Navigation and up to the T junction.
- Turn left and drive out to the A6. At the A6 you want to be going towards Manchester BUT you are not allowed to turn right, so go left, up to the Tesco roundabout then double back on yourself on the A6 towards Manchester.
- Drive through Furness Vale until the road takes a sharp left turn. Beware because just round the corner are traffic lights and the junction with the A6015 into New Mills. You need to be in the right lane to take the sharp right turn to New Mills.
- Once in New Mills at the next set of traffic lights turn left onto Union Road & go up the hill past all the shops and banks etc.
- At the mini round about at the top turn left onto the B6101 (Market Street) signposted to Marple.
- Stay on the B6101 all the way into Marple (aprox 3.5 miles from this point).
- As you come into Marple you pass a large open playing field on your right.
- Shortly after this the road takes a left turn and becomes Stockport Road.
- Take the second left onto Canal Street where you can find a small car park. The cinema is just a few metres further down Stockport Road on your right.
