HistoryBugsworth Basin and boats

The village of Buxworth as it is now known has an interesting and industrial history.

It’s all in the name
The name of the village has changed a few times over the years. Apparently starting off in the 1200’s as Buggesworth, but over time the ‘ge’ was dropped leaving Bugsworth. This name stayed until the early 1900s when the population of the village became so embarrassed by the name it is alleged that residents would get off the train in Chinley (Bugsworth had its own station) and walk the remainder of their journey home. In 1929 a referendum was held and the villagers voted in favour of changing the name to Buxworth. Since then there have been a few attempts to reverse the decision. The most recent being in 1999 when residents voted 3 to 2 in favour of keeping Buxworth.
The historic canal basin retained the name of Bugsworth and most locals still affectionately refer to the village as Buggy.

This video shows clips of Buggy Basin along with a song about the Tipplers who used to work here.

The village is now split into two by the bypass (A6), constructed in the 1980s. If you look on an OS map you can see Buxworth on the North side of the A6 and Crist on the south side. Crist is where the cottage is located but Crist and Barren Clough are now accepted as part of Buxworth.
