The Peak District

The Peak District

This short video is a great introduction to the different aspects of the Peak District.

So Where Exactly is the Peak District?

The Peak District, an area of wonderful natural beauty, lies southeast of Manchester, west and southwest of Sheffield and northwest of Derby. Much of the area makes up the Peak District National Park which covers approx 555 square miles.

The green shaded area in the centre of the map shows the boundary of the National Park, but the Peak District itself covers a larger area than this.

The Cottage is located in the High Peak in the small village of Buxworth which is situated in a lovely rural location between Whaley Bridge and Chapel-en-le-Frith and lies close to the county boundaries of Derbyshire, Cheshire, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and Greater Manchester.

A Bit About the Peak District

Peak District Peak Forest Canal - Out on the canalThe area is a mixture of wide open moorland, rolling green hills, peaceful canals and pretty villages and small towns.

The Peak District National Park was the first National Park in the UK and was established in 1951. Much of the open countryside has changed little in that time, thanks in part to the work of the Park Authority. They work very hard to support local residents and the areas economy.

The Peak District is divided into two separate areas. The high uplands known as the Dark Peak or High Peak and the lowland Derbyshire Dales also known as the White Peak.
