Dog Friendly Peak District Breaks
A Dog friendly Peak District self catering holiday

With the cottage being located in one of the best walking areas in England and the fact that there are some great dog friendly pubs nearby we thought it would be a great idea to offer a dog friendly Peak District self catering holiday to guests with well behaved dogs.
The house is only relatively small so we have set the maximum number of dogs at two for your comfort and theirs.
That said there is enough floor space in the sitting room for a dog bed and even though they can’t run round in the garden there is plenty of space for them to laze in the sun after a day out walking or to spend some time working their way through a good bone (Wilds butcher will be happy to oblige with this).
However if you have a Houdini of a dog please be aware that the garden walls are quite low so they may well make an escape attempt.

You should also be aware that at the end of the garden is a field which looks very tempting for dogs to run around in. However the farmer will not look kindly at all on any dogs (other than his own – Tess a black lab) running round in it. For a majority of Spring & Autumn he has livestock in it and in the summer he grows the grass for cutting. So please DO NOT let your dog go over the wall into the field.
BE WARNED – If you are out and about in an area with livestock please keep your dogs on leads. Local farmers do not take kindly to unruly dogs chasing their animals.
In The Cottage
With you and your dog in mind we provide a few things to help you enjoy your stay at the cottage:
- “I’m on holiday” tags for your dog’s – for if they get lost during your stay
- Supply of pooh bags – please help us keep the garden clean
- Throws for the sitting room furniture – if you are not 100% sure they will stay off the furniture
- Fixed stair gate – to stop dogs from going in the bedrooms

- Vanish carpet stain remover – just in case
- Sticky rollers – great for getting pet hair of clothes etc.
- Holiday cottage dog tags – for if they go missing

But you will need to bring with you:

Walks
We wouldn’t mind betting that if you are coming to stay in the Peak District and bringing a dog with you that you are going to be doing some walking during your stay.
Being in the Peak District it won’t surprise you to hear that there are literally hundreds of options for great walks for you to enjoy with or without a canine companion.
You have to decide what sort of walk you want to do, how far you want to go, if you want to go from the front door or what sort of terrain you want to cover and then get the map out and plan.
We have put a map together in the cottage showing some or our favourite routes to help you get started but please explore as many different routes as you can.
The scenery and views are beautiful to the point of breathtaking. If you enjoy landscape photography you are in for a real treat.
Here are a few suggestions for walks you might enjoy depending on how far afield you want to go.

An Evening Out With Your Dog
If you are enjoying your time on holiday with your four legged friend its nice to know that you can spend a couple of evening out with them too.
Being in such a rural location there are a number of local pubs who are happy for you to take your well behaved pet in with you.
Unfortunately we don’t know of any restaurants that are dog friendly only pubs but most of them serve food.
Here are the ones we know about.
The Navigation Inn
Brookside
Buxworth
High Peak
SK23 7NE
Tel: 01663 732072
Only a few minutes walk from the cottage in Bugsworth Basin you will find the Navigation Inn. It is now under new management and the food has deffinately improved. The interior is still an eclectic mix of things and there are a few open fires that make a winter evening in the pub very cosy. Well behaved dogs are still welcome in the bar area where you can sit and eat. Dogs are not allowed in the restaurant.
The Old Hall Inn
Whitehough
Chinley
High Peak
SK23 6EJ
Tel: 01663 750529
Only a 20 minute walk up the Peak Forrest Tramway Trail or 5 minutes in the car and you will find this pub in the small village of Whitehough. As the name suggests this is a beautiful old hall dating back to the 16th Century. Definitely worth the walk, they serve great food, beer and wine. Well behaved dogs are welcome in the bar where you can also eat. No dogs in the restaurant.
The Shepherds Arms Inn
Old Road
Whaley Bridge
High Peak
SK237HR
Tel: 01663 732384
This is a traditional local’s pub but visitors are always welcome. Don’t expect anything fancy but a nice atmosphere and great selection of beer. Dogs welcome in the small bar. A nice walk to do from the cottage is along the canal into Whaley Bridge and then up to the pub then back home over Bings & Silk Hill.
The Railway
33-35 Market Street
Whaley Bridge
High Peak
SK23 7AA
Tel: 01663 732245
Only 25 mins walk along the canal in the Centre of Whaley Bridge you will also find the Railway (not surprisingly next to the station).
We have never been in but we know dogs are very welcome and they serve a good range of beers.
This is a great place to stop on your way home if you have been walking up past Todbrook Reservoir and the hills at the back of Whaley Bridge.
The Shady Oak
Fernilee
Whaley Bridge
High Peak
SK23 7HD
Tel: 01663 733658
Only a 15 minute car ride away the Shady Oak is popular with walkers and locals alike. There are great views over the Goyt Valley from the front of the pub and they have a room in the bar just for dogs & their owners. The pub serves good food and has a very friendly atmosphere.
Further afield there are dog friendly pubs in Chapel-en-le-Frith, Buxton, Castleton, Edale, Tideswell, Hartington and Hathersage to name but a few. For more details try searching on the Doggie Pubs Website

If you stay at the cottage and discover other dog friendly things you think we should include please let us know.
